Please help us to clean the islands, by taking back to the port the trash/garbage you generate, such as plastic waste, disposable coolers, cans. We want to keep San Blas Islands as clean as possible.
San Blas has opened the doors to tourism no more than 15 years ago, when the road was made for regular 4x4 cars. In the past, the garbage was not a problem, they were only a community living in the islands far away from the city, and most of the garbage was organic. Over time, the high increase of tourists in the area, the need of providing food, new consumption habits (Disposable coolers, bottled water, beers etc), and cero environmental awareness has increased incredibly the garbage.
There are no GARGABE COLLECTION SYSTEM in San Blas, most of the communities throw it to the ocean, hide it at the back of the islands or burn it, which damages also the air we breathe. The ocean floor around the islands is full of garbage, such as tires, plastics, diapers and many others. Even in the communities they are living in the trash, but they do not realize as they are used to it, there are plastic and soda and beers cans around the roads of the houses, shops and clinics.
Tourist Islands such as Waily Lodge collect the trash in the back to go little by little taking it out with the trips they can, due to this, we don’t recommend you to go around the Islands, since you will find all garbage not only generated by the islands, but that comes from the ocean.
COMMITMENT OF THE COMPANY:
We as an agency are committed to the environment, and to the community, we are working very close with them. Starting in April, our team will volunteer and bring more volunteers once a month to clean the islands, collect the garbage and teach good recycling habits to the Locals. If you are interested on participate to this project, please let us know Marisol 64852841 / Viviana 6513-6989, wth your time or money donations we can buy supplies to make clean San Blas Islands again.
We will create a commitment among all our collaborators: drivers, restaurants, cabins with the purpose of committing ourselves not to litter in nature. The driver must have a trash can in his car and boat. Restaurants should avoid the consumption of disposable material, cabins should have all garbage cans and avoid burning, hiding or throwing garbage into the sea. We will constantly invite our clients to preserve the environment by giving each family a garbage bag and encouraging them to return with their garbage, not to leave it on the islands.
Carry out cleaning campaigns: #TrashtagChallenge
Panama San Blas Tours will work with volunteers from different areas: students, companies and associations to carry out cleaning campaigns on the islands. We will take pictures of before and after the campaign and we will spread on social networks.
We will create workshops on why and how to care for the environment of the natives of the islands. Our collaborators will be part of this learning through everyday example. Our clients will be part of this project through different campaigns: they will read a presentation of the islands, they will be given reusable cavas that replace the plastic bags, posters will be made with images that will motivate them not to throw garbage on the islands.
We are going to invite recycling experts to help us teach how to recycle materials. We will create a plastic container in the main port so that natives and customers can deposit their bottles and plastics.
