In Panama city there are 2 seasons. Dry and Wet Season. The dry season starts on Dec to May and the Wet season from June to November.
This is how the people makes plans in Panama City, the wet season you will have really heavy rain for many hours, and the streets get flooded.
However, in San Blas Islands during the rain season, you will not necessarily find rain every day in San Blas, there are complete weeks with no rain at all, and most importantly the sea is super calmed. So, its actually better to travel to San bLas during the rainy season! Worst you will get a little wet during max. 1 hour. The rain in San Blas last much less than in the city.
Now, which month you should be careful to go to San Blas? Just February, you will have big waves. In this month, we only recommend visiting the nearest Island, for example Aguja Island is only 15minutes form the port.
San Blas Islands in Panama are a hidden paradise which up to now is not very famous. This is the time to come to San Blas before it is fully crowded. I can only compare it with Maldives Islands or Thailand Islands, and the best thing is that it is still untouched by the big hotels chains.
It’s a place protected by the Kunas native people, and they only allow to make wooden bungalows, with barely a touch of electricity it is great place to rest and enjoy with the people you love. Internet signal is hard to get and there are no mirrors! So, prepare yourself ladies!
What about Sailing in San Blas Islands?
It is the best option, not only because is much more comfortable but also because you can reach the best inhabited islands where all you can find are turtles, rails, big fishes, dolphins and more.
The islands are called Cayos Holandeses, those are a group of medium-big size islands which are just amazing. As it is untouched by the human you can find starfishes all around, rest in a dessert island, snorkel in great coral reef spots and afterwards come back to the comfort of your boat to take a shower and a lobster meal.
Many of our Capitan’s support local fisherman or fish their own food when available, you will taste the best of 2 worlds. The fresh fishes and the European cuisine prepared by one of the crew members accompanied of a glass of wine.
Is Sailing in San Blas now prohibit or not permitted?
It is not. You can still sail in San Blas Islands with no issue at all. The only difference now is that we cannot use the regular boarding Port in Carti, since this one is excusive for people who will stay in the islands. We can use many other ports which are closer to Colon area, which have better infrastructure and the road is better also. The ports we use now are: Turtle Cay, Puerto Lindo, Miramar Port and even Palmira port. Transport + Boat transfer cost 160USD per person both ways.
There are around 2.5-3 hours driving from Panama City to the port and you arrive directly to the port. In the case of Palmira, you need also a boat to take you to the Catamaran.
You can also flight to Corazon de Jesus Islands using AirPanama.com. It cost around 250USD the flight both ways.
What’s the Minimum time recommended to Spend In San Blas Islands?
In San Blas Islands there is a minimum of 2-3 nights to really enjoy the Islands.
Is it better to Sail from San Blas Panama to Cartagena Colombia, or any other place in Colombia?
No, we don’t recommend to sail from San Blas to Cartagena, unless you really like boats and you have had a skipper experience. The best part of the journey will be San Blas Islands, but the last 2 nights, you will spend time to cross the ocean to arrive to Cartagena. The distance is long, so you maybe get seasickness.
